In partnership with The Global Citizen Education Group, the Harvard Undergraduate Global Education Movement (HUGEM) is pleased to bring the HUGEM Workshop on Innovation and Leadership (HWIL) to Indonesia under the overarching theme Future-Ready Cities. This two-day workshop aims to engage outstanding students from across Indonesia in understanding how modern cities can evolve into inclusive, people-centered environments that support growth, resilience, and collective well-being. Through interactive lectures, group challenges, and hands-on activities, participants will explore the importance of social inclusion, accessible urban systems, and the role of human development in shaping the cities of tomorrow.
Throughout the program, students will be equipped with practical leadership and innovation skills they can apply in their schools and communities. They will analyze real-world urban challenges, collaborate in diverse teams, and develop solutions that address issues such as inequality, mobility, education, and climate resilience. By combining critical thinking, effective communication, and design-driven problem solving, HWIL Indonesia I empowers young leaders to envision meaningful change and contribute to building future-ready cities where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
LEARN FROM HARVARD MENTORS AND EXPLORE FUTURE-READY URBAN SOLUTIONS
At HWIL Indonesia I, participants will engage with Harvard student mentors and explore how inclusive, people-centered cities are built. Through guided discussions and immersive activities, learners will deepen their understanding of social inclusion, human development, and the systems that make cities thrive. They will gain practical leadership skills that help them think critically about real urban challenges and envision equitable solutions for their communities.
COLLABORATE WITH PEERS TO ADDRESS REAL-WORLD URBAN ISSUES
Students will strengthen their teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities as they work with like-minded peers to analyze and respond to the most pressing issues facing Indonesia and global cities. From mobility and public spaces to education access and community well-being, participants will ideate and develop solutions grounded in empathy, innovation, and inclusive design.
BUILD A COMMUNITY OF FUTURE-READY LEADERS AND CHANGEMAKERS
HWIL Indonesia I will cultivate a dynamic cohort of young leaders committed to shaping cities where people of all backgrounds can thrive. By the end of the program, learners will not only have a clearer understanding of how cities can support human development, but will also be equipped with the mindset and tools to lead meaningful change in their schools, neighborhoods, and communities.
Our immersive seminars and interactive discussions for HWIL Indonesia I will center on the overarching theme Future-Ready Cities, with a particular focus on Social Inclusion and Human Development within Indonesia context. Guided by key Sustainable Development Goals, this workshop explores how rapidly growing cities can become more resilient, equitable, and people-centered.
As Indonesia communities navigate recurring challenges such as worsening traffic congestion, unequal access to services, and the widening social gap across urban and rural areas, this workshop is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to envision a more inclusive future. Through expert-led sessions, hands-on activities, and meaningful discussions, learners will explore how human development, community well-being, and participatory urban planning can transform the everyday lives of Indonesians. They will gain a deeper understanding of sustainability principles tailored to local realities - such as accessible mobility and community - focused public spaces, and equitable access to education and opportunities.
